Refurbishment and extension of a Grade II listed Italianate villa within the Primrose Hill Conservation Area in Camden, North London. The project carefully balances the preservation of historic character with the needs of modern family life.

Originally designed in the 1840s by Henry Bassett, the villa forms part of a distinguished crescent of Italianate houses, celebrated for their sweeping façades, stucco detailing, and distinctive loggia towers. The villa remains one of the few examples to have retained its original plan and garden layout.

JUB STUDIO worked closely with the client and project team to enhance the building’s liveability while safeguarding its heritage value. Proposals included a sensitively designed rear dormer extension, improved connections to the garden, and subtle internal alterations to bring natural light deeper into the home.

Throughout the process, the practice engaged with Camden’s conservation officers to refine the design. Decorative features such as cornices, plasterwork, and original joinery were retained and restored, while new interventions were carefully detailed to preserve the legibility of the historic plan.

The result is a home that celebrates its architectural and historic significance while adapting gracefully to contemporary living.
