Located within the Highgate Conservation Area, this project involved the sensitive extension and restoration of a traditional upper maisonette, transforming a historic terraced property into a light-filled, adaptable home for contemporary living.
The design centred on a full internal reconfiguration to optimise space across all levels, alongside a loft conversion with a modest rear dormer. The dormer, clad in lead with dark-framed aluminium glazing, is carefully scaled and set in from the roof edges, ensuring it remains subservient to the existing roof form in line with conservation guidance. A new glazed gable at second-floor level draws natural light deep into the interior, while conservation rooflights introduce additional daylight without compromising the building’s historic character.
Externally, the scheme reinstates original architectural features lost over time. A new timber porch downstand, modelled on examples still found along Southwood Avenue, re-establishes the building’s historic entrance rhythm. A bespoke front door, designed to match the proportions and detailing of the original, restores a sense of architectural integrity to the façade.
Every intervention was guided by the principles of the Highgate Conservation Area Appraisal and local planning policy: extensions are subordinate in scale, contemporary in detail, yet harmonious with their context. Materials were chosen for their durability and sensitivity — lead cladding, clay roof tiles, and timber joinery complement the existing red brick fabric while introducing a refined, modern layer.
The result is a home that respects its historic setting while offering a fresh spatial clarity and improved quality of life. Southwood Avenue demonstrates JUB STUDIO’s ability to balance planning and conservation requirements with a client’s aspiration for light, space, and modern comfort.
