A three-storey townhouse within the Inkerman Conservation Area in Camden, refurbished with a sensitive rear extension that enhances the home’s livability while respecting its historic context. The project reflects a careful balance between innovation and conservation, ensuring the new work is subordinate to the original building and contributes positively to the wider character of the area.
The proposals introduced a single-storey extension at ground level, accommodating a new stainless steel kitchen, utility room, and WC. An internal courtyard between the extension and the main house provides a light-filled threshold to the garden, enriched with leafy greens and climbing vines that blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
In line with conservation guidance, the extension was designed to be modest in scale, subordinate to the existing building, and in harmony with its historic form. The depth was aligned with the neighbouring extensions on Willes road, maintaining consistency across the terrace. Architectural detailing played a central role in ensuring the new intervention sits comfortably within its setting: depth and layering in the façade and window proportions echo the rhythm and classical detailing found locally, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
By carefully addressing planning considerations — including scale, materials, and impact on neighbouring properties — the extension strengthens the architectural integrity of the house while preserving the balance and harmony of the terrace.
The result is a home that feels more open, functional, and connected to nature, while remaining rooted in the historic character of the Inkerman Conservation Area. Willes Road exemplifies JUB STUDIO’s approach: sensitive yet inventive architecture that respects heritage guidelines while enhancing the quality of everyday life.
